Stiftung hamburg maritim - Owner of S/Y HETI

Objectives

The aim of the foundation is not only to preserve evidence of the maritime history of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, but also to preserve it and make it accessible to the general public.

Historical ships are sailed according to old traditions or operated with steam, spices are stored in the listed quay sheds in the former free port next to the exhibits of the harbour museum, and the Sandtorhafen harbour serves as home port for numerous traditional ships.

Operation Method

Preservation

Similar to a shipping company, the Foundation acquires ships and port facilities worth preserving - after thorough examination. The acquisition depends on the monument value of the ship as well as on the possibilities of financing through sponsors. A viable, long-term utilisation concept is also a prerequisite for the decision to take a ship into the ownership of the foundation.

Restoration

The restoration of historical objects requires a high degree of professional competence and care. To this end, the Foundation cooperates with shipyards and specialist firms, as well as with educational and funding institutions.

Operation

For many Hamburgers, ships and port facilities are part of their own history. This personal solidarity leads to an exceptionally large honorary commitment to the preservation of the maritime heritage of our city:

Under the umbrella of our foundation, more than 1,600 volunteers work for the preservation and operation of our historic ships.  They thus enrich the cultural offerings of the city: because the ships of our foundation are not only preserved, but can also be experienced by everyone on public voyages.
